The Orchid Collection

This collection comes from years of exploring natural perfection. It includes over 100 master images, each made with a special hyperrealistic technique that brings out the detailed, sculptural beauty of the world’s most admired botanical subjects.
The Art of the Impossible Image
At first glance, these seem like photographs, but they are not; the prints are composites of high-resolution photographs. Each masterwork is composed of up to 100 separate images combined to reveal details that a single shot cannot capture.
- The Bloom and Bloom Close-Up
The “Bloom and Bloom Close” images are created by combining up to 100 macro photos. Kevin G Saunders captures every point of focus, since at this magnification, the depth of field is smaller than a millimeter. These images are digitally stacked so every stamen, petal, and drop of dew is sharp. With his state-of-the-art view camera and lenses, a two-inch bloom can be transformed into a 40 x 53-inch composite, showing incredible detail. - The Plant
The “Plant” portraits use a special panoramic “stitching” technique first developed for Saunders’ 50-foot-wide cityscapes. Several high-resolution images are stitched together, much like a digital patchwork quilt, to create a master file that is so detailed that an orchid plant can be printed ten feet tall with no loss of quality.
A Modern Orchidomania
In the 19th century, “Orchidomania” or “Orchidelirium,” was a time when Victorian collectors searched far and wide for rare orchids. This collection carries on that tradition in a modern, artistic way, sharing the spirit of these beautiful plants with a new generation of collectors.
A Dialogue with the Masters: Sargent & Saunders

John Singer Sargent painted the beauty of entire fields, while Kevin G. Saunders uses a hyperrealistic technique to reveal the hidden structure within a single bloom. This creates a dialogue between two centuries, two styles, and a timeless subject.
A Multi-Year Dedication

This collection is the result of a multi-year disciplined effort. As Mirka, Saunders’ assistant, suggested, the story of an orchid is best told in three parts: the whole plant, the full bloom, and a close-up of the bloom. Inspired by her idea, he created over 140 master images to capture the full story of each subject. To date, 112 images have been completed, as the project was paused in 2014, when Saunders transitioned to full-time portraiture. The collection is shown here as a completed body of work, created before the time of AI. All these images were made without the use of any AI simulations and represent the end of an era.
The Collector’s Opportunity
For collectors, acquiring investment-grade art directly from the artist’s studio is a unique opportunity. It guarantees provenance and builds a personal connection to the work. Each master image in this collection is available in both limited and unlimited editions, so your investment stays rare and valuable.

Provenance and Framing

The 60-page client-facing Orchid Collection Lookbook is a comprehensive guide to the art. It includes the full artist’s statement. The collection is shown in groups of three, since many orchids are presented as a grand-scale plant, a large hyperrealistic bloom, and a close-up of that bloom. We also display portraits in various settings, along with framing and sizing details, to help you select the perfect size and style for your space.
