The Orchid Collection

A multi-year exploration into the world of natural perfection. This collection of over 100 master images uses a proprietary hyperrealistic technique to reveal the intricate, sculptural beauty of the world’s most coveted botanical subjects.

The Art of the Impossible Image

At first glance, these appear to be photographs. But they are not. They are technical masterpieces—digital sculptures composed of hundreds of separate images to achieve a level of detail that is physically impossible to capture in a single shot.

  • The Bloom and Bloom Close-Up
The “Bloom and Bloom Close” images are master composites that combine up to 100 individual macro photographs. To conquer the challenges of physics, the artist meticulously captures every point of focus on a subject with a depth of field of less than a millimeter. These layers are then digitally “stacked” to create one impossible image where every stamen, petal, and drop of dew is in perfect, sublime focus. Due to the quality of the equipment, a two-inch bloom can be printed as a 40 x 53-inch composite, showing incredible detail.
  • The Plant
The “Plant” portraits are created using the same proprietary “panoramic stitching” technique the artist developed to create 50-foot-wide hyperrealistic cityscapes. Multiple high-resolution images are stitched together like a digital patchwork quilt, making a final master file so detailed that an orchid plant can be printed ten feet tall with absolutely no loss of quality.

A Modern Orchidomania

The 19th century witnessed a period of “Orchidomania,” during which Victorian collectors went to extraordinary lengths to acquire the rarest specimens. This collection is the modern, artistic continuation of that historic, passionate pursuit of natural perfection, capturing the soul of these magnificent subjects for a new generation of patrons.

A Dialogue with the Masters: Sargent & Saunders

Where the great master John Singer Sargent captured the sublime impression of a whole field, the modern master uses a hyperrealistic technique to reveal the sublime, hidden architecture within a single bloom. It is a dialogue between two centuries, two methods, and one timeless subject.

A Multi-Year Dedication

This collection is the result of a multi-year obsession. As my brilliant assistant, Mirka, observed, the whole story of an orchid is told in three parts: the entire sculptural plant, the full bloom, and an intimate close-up of the bloom. Following her insight, each of the over 140 master images in this collection was created with this same dedication to capturing the subject’s complete narrative. Currently, 111 images are finished, as the project was halted in 2014 to allow Kevin Saunders to focus on portraiture full-time.
